A CHIANG RAI WEEKEND

A 3 hour drive north of Chiang Mai is the city of Chiang Rai.(top of map)

The city was founded by King Mangrai in 1262 and became the capital of the Mangrai dynasty.  Chiang Rai was conquered by Burma and remained under Burmese rule for several hundred years.
From Chiang Rai it is easy to visit  Doi Tung , Doi means mountain, and is home of  Doi Tung coffee plantations, Mae Sai on the Burma border, and the Golden Triangle.

First stop was Doi Tung and the King's mother's Royal Villa
