"LOY KRATHONG" 2009

Here are a few pics of the Loy Krathong celebration taken by the Ping River. Pictures are not too great as hard to take pics in the dark.

There is not any way to adequately describe the night time festival! Picture a fireworks show starting at dusk that goes on for hours and hours non stop. Everyone purchases fireworks and sky lanterns from street side vendors. There are NO rules just start setting off the fireworks!! People set them off in the streets, on sidewalks, from top of buildings, the banks of the river. It is sort of scary as no thought is given for safety......... At anyone time you can literally see hundreds of sky lanterns in the sky!

The old wooden house is right on the river and an ideal place to camp out!

While all of this is going on the streets are lined with food venders, beer stalls, and stages set up for live music. Thai's favorite grilled salt fish and a huge deep fat fryer and lots of calories!!!!

The celebrations in & around Chiang Mai include the release of thousands of “Khom Loys” (paper hot air floating lanterns) into the night sky all over the city, During the Loy Krathong festival in Chiang Mai each evening the Ping River becomes a sea of glittering floating lights, while overhead the magical floating lanterns light the night sky & fireworks are let off everywhere.

The word “Loy” means to float and “Krathong” is a small vessel made from banana leaves which can float on water. A candle is placed in the krathong, along with incense sticks and small coins. A wish is then made and the “krathong” is sent floating down the river.

This act is seen as a symbolic gesture of gratitude to the Mother River – the source of water without which we could not survive. Thai belief is that floating the beautiful Krathong away also refers to sending away misfortune and bad things from the past and asking for good luck & fortune in the future.

Meanwhile in the "Old City" candles line the streets, garlands of lights crisscross the roads, shops are decorated with lanterns, and candles float in the moat!

Over 20,000 lanterns are strung above the streets and the Buddha watches over all! ......... THAILAND REALLY IS AN AMAZING PLACE!!!
