Udon Thani 388 miles Chiang Mai to Udon March 16 - 19 2018, flew to Udon Thani - flight time a little over an hour.... Udon is home to one of the world’s earliest bronze-age civilizations, at Ban Chiang. Archaeological evidence – earthenware pottery and bronze fragments – unearthed here suggest that the prehistoric settlements existed between 2100BC and 200AD. Other ancient structures and artifacts are also found inside Phu Phra Baht Historical Park. Here, rising amidst a vast sandstone mountain are peculiar rock formations, as well as dinosaur foot prints, cave paintings and Buddhist structures. Prehistoric Cave Paintings Erosion and...
We left Chiang Mai and headed for Mae Hong Son a fairly large town in N.W. Thailand. We had to head S.W. in order to get N.W. as we had to go around and through a large mountain range. Doi Inthanon is over 8,500 ft. high. Here are pics of views along the way. Shots of the hotel we stayed in in Mae Hong Son and the park area. The "Hot Springs" in the area are too hot for soaking in. some are all most 195*. The signs around the springs were interesting and I still have not figured out what some of them mean??? Sites around the area - Sleeping Buddha and cave with stream and fish living inside. Our next stop was the "backpacking village of Pai, which is pronounced Bye!! Lots of neat shops and restaurants to explore. We stayed at the "Quarter" a small botique hotel. From here we visited the waterfalls and temples in the area. Stay tuned for next post as we make our way to Burma and Laos!! Well, at least Charlie got into Burma but I could not go as it would have scr...
Here are a few pics of the Loy Krathong celebration taken by the Ping River. Pictures are not too great as hard to take pics in the dark. There is not any way to adequately describe the night time festival! Picture a fireworks show starting at dusk that goes on for hours and hours non stop . Everyone purchases fireworks and sky lanterns from street side vendors. There are NO rules just start setting off the fireworks!! People set them off in the streets, on sidewalks, from top of buildings, the banks of the river. It is sort of scary as no thought is given for safety......... At anyone time you can literally see hundreds of sky lanterns in the sky! The old wooden house is right on the river and an ideal place to camp out! While all of this is going on the streets are lined with food venders, beer stalls, and stages set up for live music. Thai's favorite grilled salt fish and a huge deep fat fryer and lots of calories!!!! The celebrations in & around Chiang Mai include the relea...
