"SONGKRAN" Happy Thai New Year
"LET THE GAMES BEGIN!"
I have spent the last few days in the Old City for Songkran (Thai New Years-2552). It is one big street party around the moat and the main objective is to throw water on everyone and PARTY!! The bars along the moat all have music blaring away with lots of street dancers and water throwing. Some of the big dance clubs have stages set up for live bands. At Central Mall there are stages on each side of the street (sponsored by liquor and beer companies) and it is sort of like battle of the bands BUT with water cannons firing water back & forth across the street!! One big "wet t-shirt" party!!! Pick-up trucks drive around & around the moat throwing water on the people at the side of the street who get back at them especially when they have to stop for traffic. Not a good day to take a ride in a Tuk-Tuk or on a motor scooter.....
People lining the "Moat" as far as the eye can see and all getting water to throw on whoever comes close enough! You will notice that I take most of the pics from behind the "throwers" - In front of them is NOT a "good" place for a camera.
Don't come to town if not prepared to get WET - WET - WET!
Dancers behind the mist in front of "Mandalay" one of the biggest and most popular dance clubs in the city. No, I have not been as activities start after midnight!!
Now for the good part - Time to eat..... I had a large grilled garlic sausage, a strawberry smoothie, a steamed rice donut stuffed with spicy minced pork, a large dish of shrimp and noodles, and then a pastry stuffed with sweet cream! I think that was all I had AND believe it or not I did not have any stomach problems..... Here is "Walking Street" lined with food stalls and "Your table is waiting".
My "Chef" for the night working on the Prawns and Noodles.
Local rooster that escaped inside temple and avoided being someone's dinner! Happy New Year!
A young street musician from the Hill Tribes with Mom or Grandmother overseeing the "tip" jar.
After dinner entertainment from street musician, to "Lana" dancers, and musicians. Thai people are very proud of their culture and the young people are keeping up the heritage......
